How Kreative Koalas works

We are thrilled to introduce you to the Kreative Koalas program, an innovative action learning program that immerses primary school students in sustainability awareness, understanding, and action through art, design, creativity, teamwork, and project development. This program is uniquely aligned with curriculum learning areas, general capabilities, all three cross-curriculum priorities, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Here's an overview of how the Kreative Koalas program works and what it offers:

1. Community Action Project:
   • Content: Partner with local champions to design, deliver, and report on a behaviour change project addressing Australia’s commitment to the SDGs.
   • Purpose: To inspire students to take local action on important social and environmental justice issues, fostering a sense of community and real-world impact.
2. Digital Learning Journey Journal:
   • Content: Students document their learning journey in a digital journal, creatively communicating their experiences and learnings to a broader audience.
   • Purpose: To encourage students to reflect on their learning process, enhancing their digital literacy and communication skills, and to share their insights and achievements with the community.
3. Artwork:
   • Content: Schools receive a giant blank fiberglass koala to be used as a canvas for creating an artwork that focuses on a sustainability theme, along with a resource kit and Matisse paints.
   • Purpose: To engage students in expressing their understanding of sustainability through art, fostering creativity, and providing a lasting legacy that reminds the community of the importance of caring for our planet and each other.
4. Professional Learning Opportunities:
   • Content: Multiple professional learning opportunities are provided for teachers to enhance their skills and knowledge in sustainability education and project facilitation.
   • Purpose: To support teachers in effectively delivering the program and to ensure ongoing professional development in the field of sustainability education.
5. Integration with Curriculum:
   • The Kreative Koalas program is designed to align with various aspects of the Australian Curriculum and NSW Curriculum, providing a comprehensive educational experience that covers key learning areas and general capabilities.
6. Cross-Curricular Opportunities:
   • This program encourages cross-curricular collaboration among teachers, allowing for an interdisciplinary approach that enriches students’ understanding of sustainability through different subject lenses.
